Ethel Messier, 89, passed away Wednesday November 30th, 2016, at the St. Albans Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center with her loving family by her side.
Ethel was born in Fairfax, VT at her family farm on February 22, 1927, the daughter of the late Oliver and Josephine (Thibault) Cross. She was the youngest of 9 children and graduated the 6th grade from Fairfax Elementary. Ethel worked as a waitress for many years until she was married in 1948 to Louis Messier and began working as a housekeeper for many families in the Fairfield area. Among working various jobs, including packing maple syrup for the Soule Family, she raised her five children.
She enjoyed gardening, bingo, the bizarre, baking, bird and squirrel feeding and most importantly hosting Sunday dinners at her house. Her guests included her siblings, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family. Ethel enjoyed sitting by her wood stove sewing. She made each of her grandchildren quilts and pot holders and never forgot a family member’s birthday.
Ethel volunteered her time at the Franklin County Senior Center in St. Albans and was a member of St. Anthony’s Church in East Fairfield.
Ethel is survived by her five children; Beverly Bovat and her husband, Howard; Diane Messier-Lazarski and her husband, Al; Michael Messier and his wife, Bonnie; David Messier and his wife, Anne; Ronald Messier and his wife, Skylar; her grandchildren and great grandchildren; Debbie Domina and her son, Kevin; Leo Messier; Kimberly Burgess and her husband, Jessie, along with Kim’s daughter, Ana and their four children; Adriana, Madison, Spencer, Jonas; Shannon Trainer and her husband, Jason and their daughter, Abigail; Bobbie Jo Messier; Billy Jo Messier, Travis Messier and his wife, Melissa and their three children; Trinity, Brooklyn and London; Karen Lehning and husband Alex; Nathan Messier and his companion, Kristen Begnoche and their three daughters; Sophia, Delilah and Madelyn; Sharon Garrette; Danielle Heald and her husband, Christopher and their daughters, Harper and Chloe; Sarah Chevalier and her husband, Matthew and their two children, Ashton and Madison; Jason Messier and his wife, Jamie and their daughter, Summer and special nephew, Andrew Dulude and niece, Shirley Parrott.
In addition to her parents, Ethel was predeceased by her 8 siblings and special friend, Neil McGinn.
A funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 6th at Holy Angels, 245 Lake Street, St. Albans, with the Reverend Mr. Duane E. Langlois officiating. Interment will be later next spring in Saint George’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, December 5th from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St. St. Albans.
